5 Early Signs That May Indicate Diabetes

One of the scariest statistics I ever heard had to do with the fact that many people have diabetes for years and go undiagnosed. The main reason for this is that they simply don’t know they have the disease.

Here are 5 lesser known symptoms of diabetes. I say “lesser known,” but actually, these symptoms are really just an early indicator that you are a diabetic.

1. Blurred Vision

  • If your vision just isn’t as sharp as it once was, and/or you are experiencing little “specks” or “spots” in your field of vision that dart away as you look at them (floaters), then you might want to get your blood sugar checked to see if it’s high.

2. Itching Below The Waist

  • Many things can cause itchy genitals, from sensitive skin to allergic reactions.  Another cause is thrush, or yeast infections, which can strike often if you are a type 2 diabetic.  This occurs because high glucose levels in blood and urine provide the perfect environment for yeast to thrive.

3. Wounds Don’t Heal Very Fast

  • If minor cuts, scrapes, and bruises are slow to heal, it could be a sign of a nutritional deficiency, seen largely in people with diabetes.

4. Increased Nausea and Vomiting

  • Major blood sugar fluctuations can disrupt your metabolism and cause dizziness, which in turn makes people feel sick. Vomiting and nausea can happen for many reasons, such as food poisoning, but it’s also important to consider diabetes as a possible cause.

5. Dizziness

  • Mentioned above, dizziness can be a sure sign of diabetes due to both low blood sugar and dehydration. Diabetics often become dehydrated because uncontrolled blood sugar can cause excessive urination.

I have posted a slideshow below which goes a little more in-depth.  It’s very important to be on the lookout for early warning signs, because if you have diabetes and it goes uncontrolled for any extended period of time, it can cause permanent damage to your body.  If you are experiencing any or all of these symptoms, do yourself a favor and make an appointment with your PCP.
